Florida — Pensacola (Gulf of Mexico), United States
The aircraft carrier USS Oriskany ("The Mighty O") was scuttled in 2006 about 22 nautical miles south-east of Pensacola, creating the largest artificial reef ever intentionally sunk. The island superstructure tops out around 25 m, the flight deck lies near 44 m and the hull rests on sand at roughly 65 m. Huge schools of amberjack, red snapper and barracuda patrol the structure.
Access & safety: Offshore boat dive with exposure to Gulf currents and swell. The flight deck and below are deep technical territory — plan gas, decompression and penetration limits accordingly.
